Sergey Slesarev, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, and Nurlan Madaminov, General Director of OJSC “Kyrgyztelecom”, met with Lu Farming, Vice President of China Telecom Global Limited, a business group of telecommunications operators. During the meeting, a solemn ceremony of signing the Memorandum of Understanding was held. This strategic document marks the beginning of a large-scale project to modernize the cross-border junction at the Irkeshtam crossing, which promises to significantly improve the communication infrastructure between the two countries and regional partners.
According to the memorandum, it is planned to increase the bandwidth of the cross-border junction. The project is an important part of the global “One Belt, One Road” initiative aimed at creating new trade and economic routes between Asian countries and Western Europe, similar to the ancient Silk Road.
The modernization of the cross-border junction at the Irkeshtam crossing provides for the installation of the latest technological equipment, which will create a backup communication channel for Kyrgyzstan. The main internet channel linking Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan will remain operational, but the new backup channel will provide additional network reliability and resiliency, which is especially important given the growing demand for high-speed internet and digital services in the region.
The project will be financed on a bilateral basis, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan in realizing common goals. The introduction of the latest technologies and a significant increase in internet bandwidth will be an important step towards digital transformation and economic development in the region.
